Martyn’s Law and SIA – What Businesses Need to Know

Martyn’s Law and SIA – What Businesses Need to Know

The landscape of security in the UK is changing. Under the new Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, more commonly referred to as Martyn’s Law, the Security Industry Authority (SIA) is expanding its responsibilities.

Traditionally, the SIA has been responsible for regulating security personnel – ensuring that security guards and officers are properly trained, licensed, and professional in manner. However, with the introduction of Martyn’s Law, the SIA’s remit is growing significantly. It will now oversee not just personnel but also premises and events, enforcing robust protection measures to help prevent potential threats.

This change has important implications for all businesses, venues, and event organisers. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Stricter Security Compliance Standards | Venues, public spaces, and events will now need to meet higher standards of security. The SIA will ensure that safety measures are not just in place but that they are effective and compliant
  • Mandatory Security Arrangements | Businesses must implement SIA-approved risk assessments, employ licensed personnel where necessary, and maintain comprehensive safeguarding measures
  • Professional Security Partnerships Are Key | Partnering with a fully licensed, professional security provider has never been more important. Ensuring your security arrangements are SIA-compliant will protect your people, your business, and your reputation.

At Business Watch Guarding, we’re ready to support businesses in navigating these new requirements. Our team provides SIA-compliant security solutions, tailored to your specific premises or events. From risk assessments to on-site protection, we help you stay safe, meet regulatory requirements, and give your staff and visitors peace of mind.

Heading Into the Festive Season: The Importance of Effective Security

Heading Into the Festive Season: The Importance of Effective Security

The festive season is a time for celebration, increased footfall, and the bustle of business activity. But it’s also a period when properties are more vulnerable to theft, vandalism, and security breaches. At Business Watch Guarding, we know that taking proactive steps to protect your business over the Christmas period is essential for both your staff, your premises, and your assets.

During the festive period, businesses often experience:

  • Increased activity and movement across their premises
  • Extended operating hours and additional staff or contractors
  • Reduced oversight due to holidays and staff absences

Each of these factors increases risk. Without a robust security plan, premises can become an easy target for opportunistic crime. That’s where professional security services make a real difference.

Our services are designed to keep your business secure during this busy season.

  • Mobile Patrols | Regular, randomised patrols of your site provide a visible deterrent and monitor key access points, deliveries, and parking areas
  • Static Guards | Our trained officers ensure entrances, lobbies, and reception areas are supervised, maintaining safe access for staff, contractors, and visitors
  • Keyholding & Alarm Response | Our team responds quickly to alarms, helping to prevent losses and minimise disruption
  • Open and Lock Services | We ensure premises are securely opened and closed, reducing risks for staff working early or late shifts.

Professional security services offer multiple advantages, especially during the holiday season:

  • Enhanced Staff Safety | Staff working late or alone are protected from potential threats
  • Asset Protection | Stock, deliveries, and high-value items are monitored and kept safe
  • Deterrence | A visible security presence discourages theft, vandalism, and other criminal activity
  • Peace of Mind | Knowing that trained professionals are on site allows business owners to focus on operations (and festive preparations of course).

Taking action before the Christmas rush is crucial. Reviewing access points, scheduling patrols, and ensuring keyholding and alarm response procedures are in place reduces risk and strengthens security.

Don’t leave your Christmas security to chance. Get in touch with us today for a free, no-obligation chat and discover how our tailored security solutions can protect your business, staff, and assets throughout the festive period.

Safeguarding Your Business Park – Top Five Security Challenges

Safeguarding Your Business Park – Top Five Security Challenges

Safeguarding Your Business Park – Top Five Security Challenges

In today’s complex commercial environment, business parks are more than just clusters of offices and warehouses – they’re multitenant, hightraffic, mixeduse hubs that present unique security challenges.

For businesses operating in these spaces, understanding and mitigating these challenges is essential. At Business Watch Guarding, we help businesses protect their assets, staff, and reputation. Here are the top five security challenges that business parks face – and how to address them.

1. Unauthorised Access

One of the most common challenges is controlling who enters the premises. Business parks often have multiple entry points, making it difficult to monitor access effectively. Unauthorised individuals can pose risks ranging from petty theft to major security breaches.

What to do:

  • Install access control systems such as key cards or biometric scanners
  • Employ trained security personnel to monitor entrances and patrol the site
  • Maintain visitor logs and implement a strict check-in process.

2. Theft and Vandalism

Business parks often house valuable equipment, vehicles, and materials. The combination of multiple tenants and large open areas makes them attractive targets for theft and vandalism.

What to do:

  • Install CCTV systems covering key areas, including parking zones, building entrances, and loading bays
  • Ensure there is proper lighting throughout the park to deter criminal activity
  • Conduct regular security audits and involve tenants in reporting suspicious activity.

3. Cybersecurity Threats

With many businesses sharing IT infrastructure or networks in close proximity, cybersecurity is an increasingly significant concern. Cybercriminals can exploit weak points in one company to gain access to others.

What to do:

  • Encourage tenants to implement robust cybersecurity protocols, including firewalls and multi-factor authentication
  • Conduct regular training on phishing and other digital threats
  • Partner with IT security experts to monitor and safeguard networks.

4. Emergency Preparedness

Emergencies such as fires or medical incidents can escalate quickly in business parks if there’s no coordinated response plan.

What to do:

  • Develop and regularly update emergency response plans for all tenants
  • Conduct joint drills and training sessions to ensure everyone knows evacuation routes and protocols
  • Equip the site with fire alarms and emergency communication systems.

5. Tailgating and Insider Threats

Even with the most robust security measures in place, employees or visitors can inadvertently allow unauthorised people to enter the premises. Insider threats also pose risks to business park security.

What to do:

  • Train employees on the importance of not letting anyone ‘piggyback’ through secure doors
  • Implement visitor escorts and access restrictions
  • Monitor sensitive areas with CCTV and alarms to detect unusual activity

Safeguarding a business park is a complex task that requires a combination of technology, processes, and trained personnel. We specialise in delivering tailored security solutions that address the unique challenges of multi-tenant business environments.

Don’t Gamble with Student Safety – Why Accredited Security is the Only Choice

Don’t Gamble with Student Safety – Why Accredited Security is the Only Choice

Operating an educational facility comes with a huge responsibility – the safety and well-being of children and young people entrusted to your care.  Ensuring that every student, staff member, and visitor is protected requires more than just basic security measures – it demands a professional approach, guided by expertise, training, and accountability.

This is where partnering with an accredited security provider becomes essential.  Accreditation is more than a badge – it’s a guarantee that your security team meets the highest industry standards.

Here’s why it matters:

In-Depth Training

Accredited security providers invest heavily in their teams’ training.  Guards receive comprehensive instruction in safeguarding, risk management, and emergency response.  For educational facilities, this means personnel are not only vigilant but also equipped to handle sensitive situations appropriately and calmly.

Enhanced Background Checks

Security personnel working around children must meet stringent suitability criteria.  Accredited providers ensure that all staff undergo enhanced DBS checks, verifying their background and suitability for working in environments where children are present.  This provides peace of mind to students, parents, and staff alike.

Specialised Safeguarding Skills

Working in an educational setting requires more than general security knowledge.  Guards must understand safeguarding principles, recognising potential threats to children’s safety, and responding in a manner that prioritises care and protection.  Accredited providers ensure that their teams are not only trained but continuously updated on the latest safeguarding practices.

Reliability and Accountability

Accreditation also ensures a provider adheres to strict operational and ethical standards. This means your security partner is accountable, reliable, and committed to maintaining the highest levels of service at all times – crucial qualities for any institution responsible for the safety of young people.

Partnering with an accredited security provider is an investment in trust, professionalism, and peace of mind. For educational facilities, it’s not just about having physical guards on-site – it’s about ensuring every individual is safeguarded by trained, trustworthy professionals who understand the unique responsibilities of protecting children.

At Business Watch Guarding, we take pride in offering security services that meet and exceed these standards. All of our guards expertly trained, DBS-checked, and equipped with the skills necessary to provide a secure environment for those responsible for protecting the safety of young people.

If you operate a school, college, or university – can you be sure that your students are in the safest of hands?

What Makes a Great Security Guard?

What Makes a Great Security Guard?

Seven Top Traits We Look for in Our Team

A security guard is often the first point of contact for anyone visiting your premises. They’re not only responsible for protecting people, property, and assets, but also for representing your business in a professional and approachable manner.

As a business, we know that great security officers are so much more than just a uniform – they’re highly trained professionals who combine vigilance, communication, and customer service skills with the ability to respond calmly under pressure.

That’s why every member of our team is fully SIA-accredited, meeting the highest industry standards for training and professionalism. Our recruitment and training go beyond the basics, ensuring every one of our guards has the attributes and expertise needed to deliver truly exceptional security services.

Here are the seven top traits we look for in every member of our team…

1. Vigilance and Attention to Detail

Great security guards are naturally observant and inquisitive. They notice when something feels out of place – whether that’s an unattended bag, a faulty lock, or unusual behaviour around an access point. This attention to detail allows them to spot potential issues before they escalate into serious incidents.

2. Strong Communication Skills

Whether it’s diffusing a tense situation, giving clear instructions during an evacuation, or simply welcoming visitors to site, security officers need to communicate with confidence and professionalism. The ability to listen, respond appropriately, and keep calm under pressure is vital in this role.

3. Integrity and Reliability

Trust is absolutely everything in security. Our clients rely on our guards to uphold the highest standards at all times – from accurately logging incidents to protecting sensitive information. A great security officer is dependable, honest, and always prepared to go the extra mile to ensure the protection of our clients’ premises and people.

4. Physical and Mental Preparedness

Security work can be demanding, requiring long hours on patrol, quick reactions in emergencies, and the resilience to handle challenging situations. We look for individuals who are physically fit, mentally resilient, and able to remain composed when faced with pressure.

5. Professional Appearance and Conduct

Our security guards represent both our business and that of our clients. A professional appearance and courteous behaviour are essential as both inspire confidence and demonstrate to visitors, employees, and contractors that security is being taken seriously on site.

6. Problem-Solving Ability

No two days on our clients’ premises are ever the same. From managing unexpected visitors to dealing with technical faults or responding to an alarm, our SIA-accredited guards are trained to think quickly and act decisively. This ensures our clients’ people, property, and operations remain safe, whatever challenges arise.

7. Commitment to Continuous Training

Because the security landscape is always evolving – from changes in legislation to advances in technology – we are committed to investment in continuous professional development. Our guards regularly refresh their training in areas such as conflict management, first aid, and health and safety, ensuring they are always prepared for whatever the situation brings.
